The hymen is a layered structure which is occasionally present in the most external part of the vagina. I say occasionally, because there are many women that are born without one, other cases in which it is extremely scarce and many others who have lost it through factors which are not at all associated with the virginity.

But we do know that in Muslim and gypsy cultures, the ‘proof’ of virginity has a component of honour for both the woman and her family. And this honour has great economic, social and religious repercussions, making the woman the one who is directly responsible.

Without trying to evaluate cultures which are different to mine for example, what should be underlined is that for certain women it is very important to ‘gain back’ their virginity or simply ‘pass’ the test of virginity which is practised in foreign countries by a doctor before marriage to certify that the girl has a hymen.

The Reconstruction of the hymen still has another more turbid and dirty component, which I have read about but never seen in the consultation, unless the patients have admitted it to me, which is the case of prostitution where some degenerate and ruthless men, pay to be the one who removes the supposed virginity of a woman.

But if we concentrate on the matter at hand, basically, the reconstruction of the hymen consists in the suturing of the remains of the hymen (they are selected and sutured into each other), this way reducing the entrance to the vagina to basically an opening the width of a felt tip pen (it should not be closed completely for basic hygiene reasons).

The stitches dissolve on their own and obviously it is not recommend to use tampons, ride a horse or any activity that could put at risk the integrity of the performed surgery.
