Ear surgery

The ear surgery, is a surgery for seperated ears, or large ears or also called protruding ears. The more technical name is Hellix Valgus and is caused by multiple reasons.

On one side, its very important to say, that its the only surgery carried out on children, without it being caused by an illness or an accident. For children, its usually carried out when they reach the age when other children start to notice they have differences, with their ears. This happens round about when they are six, seven or even eight years of age approximately. It tends to coincide when the child enters primary school or is in second or third year. Some parents see that their children have very protruding ears and in a preventative way, before any other children start to notice, they come to our clinic to have the surgery done.

The most eye-catching thing about seperate ears, is the angle that the ear has from the head is very large. If you take a photo from behind you can see much better than infront. It is clearly visible, the ears are very seperated from the bone of the head, from an area called Mastoids.

Then from the front, you can see that there is an area of the ear where there is a fold missing. This fold is called Antihelix. Its a fold that runs from top to bottom of the ear, from the tip to the lobe.In the patients who have large ears, or seperated or protruding, this fold is less formed or not visible at all. You can see how this can be corrected and create the fold, holding the ear from the top and folding back over. There the fold is formed.

Using two techniques, denominated of Mustardé and of Furnas, in the operating theatre and under local anesthetic with sedation for adults, and under general anesthetic for children, using permanent internal stitches, we relocate the structures to where they should be and we create the missing folds, then we put the ear further back. The incision on the skin is done in the fold on the back of the ear, these stitches do not need to be removed, they will fall out bit by bit.

Position the ears more pinned to the head.
