How often do I need to revise my breast implants?

The revision of the breast implants is something quite important and to which the patients do not usually give much importance because they feel fine and they forget. But even though this is true, and the implants do not usually have faults, there does exist a protocol to follow.

The protocol of revision of implants recommended by Valverde & Arpino.

We carry out the following with our patients. Firstly and once we have removed the stitches after two weeks, we start with the prophylaxis of the capsular contracture with ultrasounds. Made up of ten sessions, twice each week, therefore five weeks. The revisions with both Dr. Valverde, and myself, are a week after the surgery, two weeks after, a month after, three months after and six months after, which is when the patient will be given the discharge.

After this, it is ideal, correct and recommendable, to have an MRI scan every two years, as it is the radiological technique which can give me the best and most information regarding the state of the implants. This is the theory and what we recommend to our patients.

But although this seems very easy, it is not. An MRI scan has a high cost if it is performed through a private system without the interaction of an insurer such as Adeslas, Sanitas, Caser etc etc. Although an ultrasound gives us less information regarding the diagnosis, the cost is five times less. For this reason the follow up treatment should be carried out taking into account the economic situation of the patient, doing the most with the least possible cost.

If the regular protocol is not possible, an MRI scan at least every five years.
