Curing capsular contracture with Polyurethane

A capsular contracture is an extreme reaction of the body to an object that is inserted into it which makes the scar that naturally forms around an implant, eventually harden. Although the cause of this is multifactorial, it is suspected that there are a series of bacteria that remain around the implant which favour the formation. The problem is, if this does end up forming, it can become annoying and painful.

We have an effective treatment which, in some cases, can avoid or reduce the need for a surgical intervention to treat the capsular contracture by using ultrasoundsor Capsuloblast.

But today we are not going to speak about Capsuloblast, but of Polyurethane prosthesis. You may never have heard of this type of implant. They are scarcely used in Spain but they have huge advantages.

All implants on the market are basically a “bag” filled with gel. The polyurethane prosthesis are the same except that the bag has been covered with polyurethane.

This composition at first sight appears to be like a sponge. It has a tremendously useful and intelligent mission.

We must start by saying that polyurethane has been used since the beginning of the 90’s with FDA approval. Meaning that it is completely safe. It is then important to add that the polyurethane cures the capsular contracture. Just like that. A patient with a capsular contracture, of any grade, will be cured. This is because the layer of polyurethane stops the formation of a new contracture. It integrates into the capsule which as we mentioned earlier, form naturally. It’s as if the fusion makes it permanently soft with time.

If you have patients with a contracture capsular, and you give them a new, normal, everyday implant, many of these patients will once again have a contracture. Too many of them. Some studies say up to 50%. With polyurethane, this is coming to an end. If the patient has had it once (which is not very frequent) with this type of implant you can cure the problem.
