Do you have a pocket of skin under your chin (jowl)? During your consultation we will evaluate this area to assure that the submental liposuction will improve your appearance.
If you have a large quantity of excess skin, you can consider other options such as a neck lift, but if you have good quality skin, you could have a liposuction of just that area. During your visit with our plastic surgeons, they will explain the available options to improve the area of the neck and jaw.
We do not recommend this surgery on obese patients. If the patients present with obesity, it would be better for them to lose weight first. Nor do we recommend the jowl liposuction surgery in patients with great flaccidity of the skin of the neck. In these cases, we could recommend a surgery which combines liposuction with the elimination of excess skin such as a neck lift.
Logically it depends on the type of work that the patient has. A job which requires a lot of physical effort is not the same as another which is to be sat in front of a computer all day. If in your job you have to use your arms a lot we recommend at least ten days rest and if your job requires less physical effort, with four or five days should be sufficient.
You can go to the beach or the pool from the moment that the wounds are completely closed which is usually within two weeks. You must be careful of the sun. If you have any bruises we recommend that you wait until they have disappeared.
You can exercise two or three weeks after the surgery. We do not recommend the sauna during the first month. You will have no problem lifting weight.
When you leave the operating theatre, you will be wearing a compressive corset which reduces the inflammation and allows the body to heal well from that moment on. You will wear this corset for two days without removing it, from that moment on you can shower normally.
You can go out in the sun after the stitches have been removed, which is usually after two weeks. If you are going to the beach you have to wear 50+ sun protection on the scars and on the skin. If you have bruises we recommend that you postpone going to the beach until they have healed and even then, you should wear sun protection.
A week after the intervention you can depilate.
You can travel perfectly on an aeroplane after the surgery.
You should wear a compressive corset in the area of the liposuction for at least a month. This way the tissues heal well and the result is better.
After the surgery you will be irritated. It will not be pain, but irritation. You will have the sensation of aching, stiffness and some pressure. You will take medication for the pain which means that you will have more irritation at bed time, due to the bandage, the antibiotic etc. which will provoke discomfort more than pain.
The scars of a liposuction of the neck are practically inexistent. Incisions of 3-4mm will be made behind the ear lobes so after a while they are practically imperceptible and on occasion one below the chin which is also imperceptible. However, multiple treatments exist which improve the final result of the scar such as silicon patches, rosehip oil, creams, laser, etc. etc.
You should avoid taking aspirin or any other medication which provokes anticoagulation. Let us know if you usually take vitamin supplements or medicinal plants. Some make the blood coagulate more slowly.
In general, we recommend any surgical intervention be performed when the patient is over 18 years old. In some cases, due to the psychological effects of a breast asymmetry, the intervention can be carried out from 16 years on, with of course, the consent of one of the parents or tutors.
