Consequences of losing a lot of weight

Obesity is an illness that has never existed. 99.9 % of the population were poor at the beginning of the XIX century. Not that long ago. Now less than 15% are poor. Although this is many millions of people, there has never been less poverty in the world. The human race has never been richer and that wealth has never before reached so many people. You do not have to travel far to realise this.
This wealth translates to societies being able to allow the luxury of getting fat. In fact I would say defines in a way the opulence in which we live. We can eat more than we need to, simply because we have too much.
The human body is not designed to be fat, in fact the opposite, this means obesity is killing us. It finishes us off bit by bit without us knowing it.
Then the slimming industry was born. As we have so much money, we now pay to get thin. Gastric bands, gastric bypass, gastric balloons, enormous liposuctions, etc etc etc. This without counting the miracle tablets and the herbs which remove our appetite.
Once the weight has been lost. This is where we come in. The drooping arms, the falling abdomen, the empty breasts. And this labour means that, at last, the patient starts to see themselves in a good light. Starts to feel better.
I have patients who tell me that I am incapable of understanding the good I have done for them. And during these moments is when I thank God for allowing me to help them. This is medicine.
